Being a Discourse on the Nature of Lilith with Regard to Cainite History

Among the more contentious subjects within the noble lineage and history of those possessed of the Blood of Caine, has been the nature and intentions of the figure known as Lilith. Dismissed as fabrication and metaphore by some, revered as near divine by others, it is my intention with this treatise to forward a theory that, in the course of my research, offers the best explanation of the true nature of Lilith. It is with the most profound sense duty that I approached this subject and approached the research involved therein. The following conclusions are extrapolations based upon the evidence. It is my hope that this treatise advance the knowledge of our origins as Cainites, and serve the Sabbat in our holy crusade against those who would deliver our kind into eternal bondage and subjugation.

To this end, we must explore the origins of our dread founder, Caine, and the Judeo-Christian mythology from which his creation originated. The learned reader must understand that it is this author's opinion that the 'God' to which Caine stood in rebellion against is very real, and it is by the express will of this entity, regardless of name, that Caine was created as the progenitor of the Vampiric species. Arguments that Vampires 'evolved' upon earth can be dismissed as Cainite physiology goes against biological and genetic laws. Moreover those who believe Cainites the creations of Lucifer or some other nefarious entity are likely simpleton Diabolists, attempting desperately to validate their own lack of self discipline by quack mythological theory.

'And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Caine, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord.'
Genesis 4:1

By this account in the Old Testament, the validity of which it must be noted is accepted by Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, Caine is born the third human on earth. The very 'granchilde' of God. Such then is the mortal origin of the First Vampire. As each that becomes one with the Blood was originally born to frail mortal flesh, such was the case with even Caine. This sense of conversion from the weaknesses of the mortal coil to the might of Caine's Blood will become central to the arguments later presented in this discussion.

The events of Abel's murder by Caine's hand need no further discussion here. This seminal event was the catalyst for Caine's exile from the presence of his Creator, after first having been 'marked' by God. The nature of this 'mark' is a point of much debate, though the exact form this mark took is held by this this author as a matter of triviality. The point of the mark was to inform all that encountered Caine that God would punish them sevenfold should they kill him.

'And Caine went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.'
Genesis 4:16

Thus was our Ancestor exiled. However, the mark placed upon Caine, ostensibly for his protection from murder, begs some serious questions that demand investigation. Why would Caine fear he should be murdered when he left Eden? According to scripture the only two other humans on earth were his mother and father. Did he fear that they would hunt him down and kill him? Hardly. But this threat of murder was clearly real enough that God saw fit to set His mark upon Caine such that any who met him would clearly understand that he was not to be slain. But who else was there on earth that should pose a threat to Caine in his exile?

To that end we now must explore the mythological origins of Lilith. It is written in some Hebrew and Aprocryphal texts, that Lilith was the first wife of Adam, created by God and set in the Garden of Eden. These writings also relate that Lilith was cast out from Eden because she would not become sexually subserviant to Adam. Thus was Lilith cast out. Several Apocryphal Church writers have related that Angels of the Lord were sent to find Lilith several years later, and found her in the lands East of Eden (the very same lands to which Caine was sent), where she was happily satisfying the carnal desires of several Demons. The War in Heaven, or whatever name the learned reader wishes to assign to the conflict between Lucifer and his legions and the loyal Angels of God, has no set beginning in Biblical text. Thus it is safe to assume that such a conflict can easily predate even the beginnings of human life on earth. Thus the assigning of clear distinctions between the 'Angels' sent to find Lilith, and the 'Demons' she is found in the company of. The learned Cainite reader must remember that the idea of such supernatural creatures indulging in the carnality of flesh is not without precedent in human mythology. Indeed, even the Cathayans it is said consider themselves the 'consorts of Heaven.'

Hebrew mythology describes Lilith as the chosen consort of Demons, and the 'mother' of many such creatures. The term 'mother' has powerful meaning, suggesting that she was responsible for the creation of such beings. Given the Old Testament stories of the Nephilum, the half-human, half-angel abonimations that walked the earth, the idea that Lilith could birth the spawn of Demons into human form is given real legitimacy. As Caine was the first Vampire, so is Lilith the first Infernalist.

In recent nights has come a new resurgence of interest, even worship of Lilith by many mortals. This can be readily explained as an expression by various aspects of mortal society to distance themselves from traditional sociological institutions such as patriarchal churches and family roles. To these mortals, Lilith is seen as something of a rebellious icon; a symbol of feminine empowerment. However, the resurgence of Lilith worship within the Cainite population is far more disturbing. Let us examine the so-called 'Revelations of the Dark Mother.' This supposed 'holy Book' of Lilith has recently gained for itself a loyal following among those of the Blood. Even within our Blessed Sect, the Sabbat, those espousing to follow the Path of Lilith can be found. It is interesting to note that most of the adherents to this ideology are neonates. Perhaps some are drawn to this Path by misguided interpretations of gender roles within the context of The Sabbat. These young ones have yet to realize that the Embrace granted them an equality among the sexes that mortals could never hope to imagine. The Blood of Caine is the great equalizer. Despite this, the 'Revelations' of Lilith, which was penned by a Camarilla neonate, is little more than a rambling diatribe against Caine, his Childer, Adam, and the Judeo-Christian God. It is full of references that convey a large pyscho-sexual obsession on the part of the author (i.e.'…and Adam speared her {Lilith} on the thorn of his manhood…') . Further it poses the idea that God is little more than the incompetent servant of greater powers ( an idea popularized by many in modern culture trying to weaken the acceptance of orthodox faiths), and that by eating the same fruit that resulted in Adam and Eve's exile, was Lilith made the equal of God.

'For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods…'
Genesis 4:5

These were the words of the serpent, Lucifer, to Eve. The VERY same claim put forward by Lilith's philosophy. Further it is claimed that Lillith was the lover of God, and that her subsequent love for Lucifer resulted in the Lucifer's damnation, as a result of God's jealousy. The tales of Lilith's torrid carnality with Lucifer and the spawning of their Children are clear and unabashed. The relationship between the Infernal and Lilith is cemented, by this most sinister of Cult's own admission.

It is the unholy children of Lilith and Lucifer that this author believes Caine feared during his time of exile. It was as warning to these creatures that God placed his mark upon Caine, ever a warning to them that should this man, born of God's true children, be harmed, they should all suffer. Both the fragments of the Book of Nod and the Revelations of the Dark Mother agree, that it was here that Caine and Lilith met. The exact nature of their relationship is debated, though of secondary importance. The fact that Caine was exposed to the might of supernatural power Lilith wielded is without question. However, Lilith was not present during the Temptation of Caine. This was, I believe, due to the presence of four of God's loyal Angels. No Infernalist could hope to stand before such might as that! It was only after Caine's transformation at the hands of these Angels (who do nothing without the express Will of God), that Lilith is seen again.

The Babylonian fragments of the Book of Nod speak of Lilith instructing Caine in the disciplines of Obfuscate, Domanite, and Presence. This has given many cause to speculate that Lilith has some aspects of Vampirism to her as well. Having conducted numerous interviews with veterans of the Sabbat Inquisition, I can assure the learned reader that the powers of the Infernal can easily mimic the powers of the Blood. Thus it may be better said how Lilith displayed powers similar to those of the aforementioned Disciplines, but Caine's development of them was a result of the power of his Blood. The Babylonian fragments also speak of Caine being in Lilith's thrall, until such time that his Blood strengthened to the point that he could throw off the shackles of her domination and flee. It is written that Caine 'opened himself up' to the powers that the night brought out in his Blood, thus creating the might that we know today as Disciplines. These fragments also speak of Lilith sending demons to pursue Caine.

Who but one in league with the Infernal could command the very soldiers of Hell?

Away from Lilith, Caine's power came into full and glorious bloom. The first and second generations were sired. Enoch was built. But Caine, it seems, had not forgotten the abominable children that resulted from the joining of Lilith and Lucifer's flesh. According to the Revelations of the Dark Mother, the Third Generation returned to her lands and slew her hellish children. This act is perhaps the most noble deed the Antedeluvians ever committed. According to Lilith's Revelations, only the founders of the Toreador and Nosferatu Clans showed any mercy. The thought of Absimilaard being capable of mercy is laughable at best. Mercy from the one who gave us the Niktuku?

However, it is yet unknown how much damage Lilith's bastard spawn are responsible for previous to their deaths. Imagine, learned reader, if the Children of Lilith were to have interbred with the Children of Seth? Thus, each human today would carry the taint of Lilith within them. This sounds a more plausible 'Original Sin' than that currently believed in. With the mapping of the human genome well underway, science may soon grant us the answer to that question. It is a frightening proposition none the less. But, if true, it lends those of the Blood of Caine an even greater Divinity. Caine was of the blood of Adam and Eve, and thus was of the Blood that God had set upon the earth. It was in this form that he was transformed from the mortal coil of humanity, to the might of the Vampire. Thus, down through the generations, each mortal was raised from frail flesh to the Blood of Caine. Thus, if the taint of Lilith's children resides in humanity today, then the Embrace is Salvation. It restores them to the Blood of Caine, closer then to the very Blood of God. The Infidels of the Camarilla, who view the Embrace as Damnation personified, could not be further then from the truth.

The legacy of Lilith can be summed up in a single word: Failure. She failed as wife to Adam, failed to become a God, failed to destroy Caine and will, according to the Babylonian frgaments of the Book of Nod, be slain by Caine during the End Times. However, her Cult demands close observation. As they openly despise Caine and those of the Blood ( a form of self-loathing or similar phsycosis?), they could be a threat to the Sect. And as they maintain a presence within our ranks, and given Lilith's open ties to Lucifer, perhaps it is time to reconsider the toleration of those within the Sect who follow the Path of Lilith. While the Sect was founded upon the ideals of freedom and loyalty, pragmatism and self-preservation must take priority over such. I thank the learned reader for their investment of time in considering this treatise. I have been honored to write this text, in hope of furthing the understanding of our origins as Cainites, and in so doing, strengthen the faith within the Sabbat, the true Swords of Caine.
